Adam Douglas is an American musician, writer and educator currently based in Tokyo.
Statement
The sky is an omnipresent feature of my photos. It has always been present but it became the defining feature of my photos after moving to Tokyo from the Kyushu countryside, which I considered to be something of a pastoral paradise. Thrown into the confining technological confusion of Tokyo, I found myself looking up, towards the beckoning freedom of the sky.
The sky is soothing. I find its expanse comforting, especially because I go for weeks or even months without ever seeing the horizon. Amidst the buildings and crowds, the only reprieve is up. I long to be yonder, in a wide-open space where my spirit can fly free.
I hope that by looking at these images, you too can feel some of the freedom I have tried to represent.

「私の写真には空が溢れています。いつもあるものだけれども、牧歌的楽園のように思っていた九州の田舎から東京に越してきてからは、私の写真の特徴となりました。科学技術的混乱の詰まった東京に放り込まれ、空が誘う自由を求めて、いつも上を向いている自分を見つけたのです。
空は癒してくれます。地平線を見ずに何週も何ヶ月も過ごすと、広々とした心地よさを特に感じます。ビルや群衆に囲まれた中で唯一の救いは上にしかありません。彼方への憧憬、私の精神が自由に飛べる広大な空間へ。
これらの作品から、私の感じている自由を皆さんにも感じていただけたら幸いです。」
